We've always tried to make AutoDirector work with as many systems as possible, and it currently works with PHP4 or 5 in conjunction with MySQL 3, 4, or 5. However, it's reaching the stage where PHP5 and MySQL5 offer many benefits and they are installed by most web hosts. Would you have concerns if AutoDirector v2.0 required PHP5+ and MySQL5+?(Note that v1.x would continue to be supported on PHP4+ and MySQL 3+)In addition, would you like support for other databases, e.g. SQLite, PostgreSQL, etc. _______________ AutoDirector administrator

I think that is a standard approach... offer the best features available.

I wish it were that easy! Most ISPs offer PHP4, and the majority offer PHP5 as well - but there are still many that don't. MySQL 5 has fewer installations than MySQL 4, and version 3 is still around. There's also the possibility of using alternative databases. At this stage, I suspect PHP5 will be the minimum requirement, especially since PHP4 has been discontinued and PHP6 is on it's way. MySQL 4 is adequate, but we'll consider MySQL 5 if there are any significant benefits. _______________ AutoDirector administrator

I use 1and1 Internet and have 4 servers with them. My main servers are still PHP 4 & MySQL 4. I had to purchase a special shared server to get PHP 5 & MySQL 5 costing £200 pa. I only use this for large instalations eg shopping cart & CMS that only come with the latest spec requirement. It seems the UK arm of 1and1 are way behind their US arm as they have the latest and UK seems to be 3 or 4 years behind. In short then whilst using the lates versions have benefits they can put up costs!

That's very expensive and I'm surprised that 1&1 can get away with it. Support for PHP4 has been dropped, although there are a large number of ISPs who still run it. I was under the impression that most also offered PHP5, but perhaps that isn't the case? AutoDirector v2.0 is likely to run on PHP5/6, but it will not be available for some time yet. v1.0 will still run under PHP4 and will continue to be supported. _______________ AutoDirector administrator
